Crosby/Lemieux Arena Lockers Up For Auction

'Tis the season for charity auctions, and this is a big one: the Mario Lemieux Foundation is auctioning the locker stalls used by Mario and Sidney Crosby at the Mellon Arena. Commence salivating, collectors.

Proceeds from this online sale of memorabilia, held on NHL.com, will benefit the upcoming Austin’s Playroom in the Warrior Transition Unit on the campus of the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. The playroom is scheduled for completion in September, 2011.

Other high-profile items in the auction include game-worn jerseys, a rare Lemieux autographed Erie Otters jersey, and much, much more. But the locker stalls will attract the most eyeballs, and for good reason. Their opening bid is set at $12,500, and they should go for much more than that once the virtual hammer falls.

As any Pens fan knows, Crosby and Lemieux were briefly teammates during Sid's rookie season in 2005, and not surprisingly, their lockers were side-by-side. While Crosby kept the same locker until the Arena's end, Lemieux's locker was never filled by any other player. The fact that the high bidder in this auction gets not only one, but both of these lockers is an unreal two-for-one, and the rare nature of the item at hand should mean very good things for Austin's Playroom.
