MARC BULGER RELEASED BY RAMS

Longtime St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger (of Central Catholic HS and WVU fame) was cut loose by the team on his 33rd birthday today, presumably to clear his $8.5 million salary from the books and pave the way for former Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford to join the team via the upcoming draft.

Rams news wouldn't usually be a cause for a full post on this site, but ESPN's Adam Schefter has already predicted that the newly-freed Bulger could sign with either Arizona or the Steelers. Despite Bulger's Pittsburgh roots, I say the Steelers would be a longshot, especially with the team bringing back Charlie Batch and having Mike Tomlin favorite Dennis Dixon in the mix. But with the Big Ben saga yet to be fully played out, I suppose there is some chance of Bulger and the Steelers joining forces, albeit a small one.

Chicago and new O-coordinator Mike Martz has also been mentioned as a possible landing spot for Bulger, and if he's willing to hold the clipboard for Jay Cutler and the money was right, that would make seem to make more sense.

In nine seasons with the Rams, Bulger completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 22,814 yards, with 122 touchdowns and 93 interceptions. He took over for Kurt Warner as the full-time starter in 2003, and went to the Pro Bowl in 2004 and 2006.

One of his major downsides, however, has been injuries, and he has seen his share of them. Since taking the reigns from Warner, Bulger has only once completed a full 16-game season under center, missing eight games in 2005, four in 2007, and seven in 2009.

Bulger departs the Rams with a 41-55 record as a starter, including 1-8 in 2009, 2-13 in 2008, and 2-10 in 2007. Other than Steven Jackson, the Rams had a whole lot of nothing surrounding Bulger on offense, without a single player topping 600 yards in receiving. But as we know all too well, the quarterback gets a bulk of the credit when things go right and a bulk of the blame when things go wrong. And five wins over the last three seasons definitely qualifies as things going wrong.
