MEMPHIS' LOSS, PITT'S GAIN?

Now that former Pitt assistant coach John Calipari has accepted the Kentucky job, a few shockwaves will undoubtedly be felt. Obviously, Memphis is going to have to look for a new coach. And they might have to find some new players, too.

KDKA is reporting that Pitt could possibly have a shot at landing one of the top Juco players in the country, 6'9", 230-pound power forward Will Coleman of Miami, Florida. Coleman signed with Memphis in August, turning down his only other offer, which was from Pitt. He was also pursued by UConn, Missouri, Minnesota, Clemson, and Tulane. But with the departure of Calipari, Coleman looks to be the odd man out should he opt to get a release from his commitment, as only some recruits will be able to follow the coach to his new home.

Coleman played this season at Miami Dade County College, averaging 16 points and 16 rebounds. He would have three seasons of eligibility remaining and would provide some instant help to the Panthers up front with the potential loss of Dejuan Blair.

Says Slam Online:

Despite not playing organized ball until his junior year at Glennwood HS, where he was state champion in the 100-and 200-meter dashes, Coleman originally signed with Arkansas-Little Rock. Instead, Coleman went the junior college route because of academics. At the time, he weighed (just!) 220 pounds and has since beefed up with 40 pounds (most accounts actually report 50 pounds) of sinew. Coleman appears to be a classic late-bloomer whose coach shielded him from recruiters.

Here's a little taste of Coleman's athletic ability from January of this year.

Will Coleman, Dante Taylor...this could be the start of something interesting, don't you think? But still, one has to wonder what Coach Cal was thinking in turning his back on the #1 recruiting class in America. I'm guessing that $34 million or so will probably soften that blow. I just hope he knows what he's getting into.
