HOSSA A RED WING - UPDATED

TSN and the PG are both reporting that Marian Hossa has signed a one-year, $7.4 million deal with the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings.
Considering the wild contracts allegedly tossed around the past few days, this deal is somewhat surprising, especially considering it's relatively close to the annual numbers the Penguins offered. So much for that "hometown discount".
As expected, Penguin fans are now mostly turning their attention to Jaromir Jagr and Markus Naslund, as well as re-signing some of their own players such as Brooks Orpik.
The long-term ramifications of this signing? I'm going to say this won't sit well with Penguin fans. At all.

UPDATE:
Some good news for a change...
UPDATE 2:
Back to the bad news side...at this point I think we're down to about five or six guys left on the team...

I wish nothhing but Torn ACLs and Pulled Hamstrings for this bozo. I think the only thing worse than the contract with Detroit would have been signing with Philly.

Honestly. I am spellbound. Flabbergasted. Dumbfounded. I am currently studying in the Cathedral of Learning at Pitt and I saw the breaking news report on TSN and dropped a rather loud F bomb in disbelief. The atmosphere is rather tumultuous now once I informed everyone. If we thought Jags had it bad here with the booing, I would suspect that Hossa could be a healthy scratch when the Wings come around to prevent some sort of attack by the fans. The fact that he took a one year deal in the neighborhood of what I would assume to be the Pens deal is shocking to me because the beef he had with the Pens offer was that the FIVE years weren't long enough.

Yar.

I just hope this means the Pens will resign Orp and hopefully get Jags/Naslund/Huselius any or all of them. I have faith in Shero.

Fuck him, I hope they hang this fuckin Judas with his silver! What waste of a trade. I wish we still ahd Armstrong.

Wow. I don't think a fan base has turned on a player so quickly as with this deal. How gut wrenching is it though? I mean, you knew he was likely going elsewhere, but to this team for this contract is just stunning.

Hossa will be roundly booed the likes of which only Jagr has seen, but that doesn't make the deadline deal any different. It was a good deal and it brought the Pens within a few games of a championship.

I'm very interested to hear more about this, including from the Hossa's mouth, as the next few days go by.

I hope his throat gets slit in a mugging, and his girl gets banged "8-Mile" style.

Prick-face, rented mule..

punch to the gut for sure. let the booing begin.

One freakin year?? what's that all about?

use it as motivation Pens.

Schide said...

What a lying dick. Hopefully now the Pens can resign Orpik and get some good winger(s). Otherwise...honestly otherwise they're still looking good, but not quite good enough.

We are all pissed, but Hossa was not our savior. He had a tremendous post-season and as pittsburgh fans who depended upon his goals this past playoffs, we should at least wish him well, and maybe tell him not to let the door hit him in the ass on the way out.

I don't live in the 'Burgh anymore, but I am also surprised how many fans booed jagr in the playoffs but are now willing to beg him to come back, if they had the chance.

This is hockey. get over it. we are spectators, not the players. how funny Pittsburgh fans (including myself) are so quick to change allegiances based on players decisions. We all are die-hards, yes. but it shows a lack of respect and gratefulness to be wishing felonious acts against someone who continuously stepped up and got our team to the SCF. Didn't hear anyone commenting on how our star captain complained like a 6-year old girl when the going got tough, and showed his inexperience of youth for most of the playoffs. of course, he's untouchable because he's under contract, right?

Hossa, Roberts, Malone, Hall: Good Luck and Thanks for the memories. We'll see you on the flipside, and be sure to keep your head up on the ice, because BGL will be looking for you.

How did Hossa lie? He says he wanted to play for a contender. He is doing that. You can't really call him a liar, but it's still very confusing. He has a great scenario set out for himself if he has a good year in Detroit because he'll get gazillions next summer. That's a big risk though (that he's apparently willing to take).

HotDog_Zanzabar said...

Hey muddyone, why don't you go F yourself after you buy your authentic RedWings Hossa jersey. When did Crosby complain like a 6 yr old girl? I don't think anyone here is begrudging him for going elsewhere, we're begruding him for taking a lesser deal than we offered from the team that just beat us in the Cup.

Fuck him! We wasted all that time on him when we should have done our best to keep Malone. Malone will be missed

RedHawks Hockey said...

I disagree about Malone. I feel this is the Colby Armstrong situation with the Hossa trade. Everyone said they would miss his character but the Pens seemed to manage pretty well without him. Malone is tough as nails and a hometown player which is why I think I alot of people are upset about seeing him go. But at 4.5 million for 7 years is absurd. He had a career year and only had 51 points. When geno was struggling in the playoffs, malone was ABSENT and he also had 14 of his 16 playoff points in the Igloo. He's a gritty player who can kill penalties well and will get in front of the net, but the Pens were smart to cut him loose. Luca Caputi will be here in 2 years and he will make you forget all about Ryan Malone. That is a promise.

HDZ - true. I don't doubt that Hossa signing with the RedWings is causing much heartburn with all of us. I think he signed with the RedWings for 1-year because it gives him an opportunity to win it all and take the huge payday next year (with no salary cap) when all teams will be shoving 10mil+ figures to players who are unproven (David Backes, anyone?). That means Hossa, given the chance to win a cup and the chance to prove that this year is not a fluke could be pulling in 13mil plus next year with no Cap limitations. it's a big risk, but shit man...he's in it for the money.

the point about this all is that we're sitting here taking potshots at someone who is going to make more money this year than all of us combined, and because it hurts so much, we also telling him to die a slow and painful death and have his girl raped??! What the funk are you people smoking?

Hossa went with the Wings because there's a very good chance they'll be in the Western conference Finals again, which means at least 12-16 games for him to score goals and up his earning for 2009.

as for Crosby, it pained me to watch him complain to the refs constantly when he wasn't getting room to skate in Games 1 and 2 against the Wings. Pretty much, put your head down and grind away, don't complain for the umpteenth time while your team is facing a 3 goal deficit. If you notice, crosby stepped it up after game 2 once he stopped complaining and started moving his skates constantly... THEN he was that player we all knew he was.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh and bleeding Gold and Black. RedWings jersey i'll never wear - Pittsburgh is in my blood, Fool.

By the way - Pens just signed Malkin. Hossa who?

Schide said...

He was reported to have said he wanted a longer contract and he took a one year deal. That's good enough to be called a liar for me. Actually I don't care all that much, I'd rather he go to a western conference team than to the east anyway. It's not like it'll matter then unless the Pens face Detroit in the finals again.

But good to hear about the Malkin deal. Unless Malkin and Crosby get extensions beforehand, that's going to some crazy offseason in 2013. Though I expect they will get extensions before then.

Now, let's see about resigning/signing some other FAs, eh?

"we also telling him to die a slow and painful death and have his girl raped??!"

It could be fast for all I care.

Ruutu gone now too. I am beginning to wonder if this is all strictly financial or if there is an underlying theme. Perhaps the distaste for Therrien is becoming more apparent?

Schide said...

Ruutu only got 1.3 mil a year? There's no way the Pens couldn't have afforded that, so I'd be willing to bet the anti-Therrien sentiment for some fo the players must be kicking in now. The hopes for holding onto Orpik are now looking much more bleak.

HotDog_Zanzabar said...

Couldn't agree more about the anti-Therrien sentiment.

I'm wondering though, are they missing on the 3rd/4th liners because they have some big name ..cough Jagr cough.. first liner on the horizon?

RedHawks Hockey said...

To be honest, I think Jags is out of the question. I think the Rangers will not give up Jags now because they would be losing him, not getting Hossa, and he would be coming to the Pens who they play 8 times a year. They need to retain some offensive threat.

RedHawks Hockey said...

Maybe they are making a push for Sundin, which I hope to God they aren't. Maybe they are trying to get a Huselius and a Naslund? One for Geno and one for Sid.

Hossa just replaced bonds as the most hated sports figure in Pittsburgh.

Koz said...

Can we stop with the Therrien BS now? Orpik signed and he was the one guy who supposedly didn't like Therrien according to many sources and he's staying. The other guys who have left have left for cash.

Brian said...

Orpik signed, 6 years for 22.5: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=242290

Dallas Mike said...

The guy only played 3 months in Pittsburgh. He wants to win a cup and parlay that into a $10M per year long-term deal. Barring an injury, he will probably achieve both goals. Who can blame him? People that expected him to stay in Pittsburgh are a little myopic. Athletes are no different than the average worker when it comes to loyalty. If there is more money to made down the road, most ambitious employees will position themselves to grab the cash. Hossa was never going to be able to sign a long-term lucrative 10+ million deal in Pittsburgh. So why not win a cup and wait for the cap to increase?

RedHawks Hockey said...

I agree, however, when you say you will take a hometown discount and you want a long term deal and you do the complete opposite it is a little different. be a man and live up to your claims. don't make promises you cant keep hossa. ass.

Any professional sports franchise that bases its signings on whether or not the players "like" the coach is a joke.

I'm tired of hearing about the players don't like Therrien. Do you get to pick your boss?

But besides... Hossa... the ultimate mercenary. The Red Wings are the new Patriots.

WAAAAAAAHHHHH Hossa signed with Detroit. I want his girlfriend to be raped. WAAAAAAHHHHHH Malone went to Tampa Bay. WAAAAAAHHHHHH Ruutu went to Ottawa.

Grow a set of nuts and quit crying. Babies.

How about this? We just signed the second-best player in the world for five more years. We just signed our toughest defenseman for four more years. We're on the verge of signing our premier goaltender to a long term deal.

Ruutu? I loved him, but he's replaceable. Malone? I loved his grit and his heart, but he's being overpaid by Tampa (and good for him by the way). Laraque? When it really counted, he was an extra piece. Adam Hall? A solid fourth liner, but don't take a bridge over it.

In other words, while we've lost some valuable pieces for sure, we've also locked up some more-valuable ones in the process.

You have to make choices. If you didn't have to, then there wouldn't be a salary cap. So quit your crying. Now it's time for some Baby Pens to step up.

And finally, don't be surprised if the Pens deal a defenseman (they're loaded there as they also resigned Eaton) and they also have Goligoski waiting at Wilkes Barre. They'll get one of the wingers they're now looking for in that trade.

Shero has had to make a lot of very tough decisions. So far, it seems like he's made a lot of great moves. You can't blame Hossa'a move on Shero. By not overpaying on guys who've left, he should still have some dollars available to afford one of the top wingers still out there to play on Sid's line.
