STEELERS SHOW WPIAL LOVE

RYAN MUNDY

SAFETY - WEST VIRGINIA

Height: 6-1 Weight: 205 40-Time: 4.55

College Coach: Lloyd Carr, Rich Rodriguez

The Steelers closed their 2008 draft by selecting someone you've probably heard of, safety Ryan Mundy of Woodland Hills, Michigan, and West Virginia. A highly-touted player out of the WPIAL, Mundy was scooped up by Lloyd Carr in 2003 but used a transfer rule to join the utopia of West Virginia Mountaineer football for the 2007 season, further fueling the budding West Virginia-Michigan rivalry. He will battle for a safety spot with the Steelers.

Notes on Mundy:
--Finished his collegiate career in the 2007 season with 45 tackles, three interceptions, and two fumble recoveries

--Played in 11 games for Michigan as a true freshman in 2003

--Started 12 games as a Wolverine sophomore in 2004

--Sat out 2005 with a medical redshirt

--Returned to Michigan in 2006 but transferred to WVU to begin his work on a master's degree in sports administration

--Was the Trib's Quad-A Player of the Year while at Woodland Hills

--A member of the Post Gazette Fabulous 22

Thoughts?
It's always interesting when the Steelers pick up a local product, be it Jerry Olsavsky, Pete Gonzalez, or Ryan Mundy. For their final pick, I have no qualms with this one: it's an interesting player who's got a chance to possibly stick. It closes a high-risk, high-reward draft for Kevin Colbert, Mike Tomlin and Co. in 2008.
